Hey baseball fans! Ken Griffey Jr. and Barry Bonds here. As two of the games all-time best players and ambassadors we want to have a heartfelt conversation about the inclusion of steroid users in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Instead of the negative aspects of the steroid era, we want to focus on the stories of redemption and second chances that occur all throughout baseball. Together we can change the narrative and celebrate the achievements of these players instead of focusing on their mistakes. There is power in inclusion and acknowledging the complete legacy of baseball.
Throughout our careers, we witnessed first-hand the impact of performance-enhancing drugs on the game we love, and we understand the disappointment and anger that many fans felt. But we also know that Major League Baseball wants to be a game of forgiveness and growth. Players are people and people make mistakes. It’s what they do afterward that should truly define them.
[Griffey] As a player that never was accused, I feel the responsibility of standing up for the great players while also pointing out hypocrisy. The Baseball Hall of Fame has let in three players that have tested positive for steroids and I’m here to say that’s okay… but now we must include them all.
[Bonds] I broke every major record but am only remembered as a cheater. I want the opportunity to be recognized for my achievements despite my mistakes. Hopefully we can change the narrative and include not only me, but the other great players that have been affected.
However, we genuinely believe that a more compassionate and empathetic approach is necessary.
To follow along with us throughout the campaign and to sign the petition to allow these players back on the ballot go to the league’s website http://www.mlb.com and follow at @MLB on twitter and Instagram!
Together, we can shape a future where redemption and growth are at the heart of baseball. We genuinely believe that a more compassionate and empathetic approach is necessary. To celebrate the game we love and the incredible athletes who have dedicated their lives to it!
